Irritable Bowel Syndrome – what to do about it

You’ve heard the term thrown around for a while, and you might have even experienced some symptoms, but do you know exactly what “irritable bowel syndrome” is all about? Perhaps you do, and perhaps you don’t. What is clear is that knowing is half the battle, so if you are familiar with the syndrome and the kinds of symptoms and treatments you should expect, you’ll be better equipped to handle it if you ever are faced with it.
A syndrome is a group of symptoms, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is aptly described as a collection of irritable bowel symptoms. One of the most common symptoms is abdominal pain or discomfort, usually in the form of gas, bloating, diarrhea, cramping, and/or constipation. Furthermore, if you are experiencing frequent or chronic constipation and diarrhea, or a combination of the two, then you might have a symptom of irritable bowel syndrome.
There are a few other irregular symptoms you should keep an eye out for: whitish mucus in the stool, a swollen abdomen, and worst of all, a feeling of not finishing a bowel movement, but being unable to complete it. If you’re a woman and you have irritable bowel syndrome, you are much more likely to have more symptoms during your menstrual period than otherwise.
You should be on the lookout for irritable bowel syndrome, but be aware that unfortunately, there is no cure for it as of yet. What this means is that you’ll have to either prevent it or do your best to treat it once it crops up. If you aren’t living the kind of healthy lifestyle that you know you should be, this in and of itself could be the reason why you aren’t as comfortable as you could be. Three major factors that influence both your health and the state of your bowel movements are diet, medicine or drugs you are taking, and your exercise (or lack thereof).
While you may not be able to totally prevent irritable bowel syndrome, or cure it, you can also be careful to alleviate symptoms or prevent them from getting worse. It can get worse if you eat certain foods, especially ones that you would already consider to be unhealthy or difficult to metabolize, like fatty foods, milk products, alcohol, carbonated/caffeinated beverages, and even chocolate. No one would blame you for putting up with the irritable bowel syndrome just so you can have your spiked cappuccino latte, of course.
How might you best treat a condition like irritable bowel syndrome, anyway? Aside from avoiding all foods that could possibly trigger a bit of discomfort, is there another way? Well, a lot of times, when your body is doing something that you don’t like, it’s indicating that there’s something it’s not getting enough of, or something that you’re doing that isn’t going well for your body. If you start thinking in terms of giving your body what it needs to run at peak efficiency, you might find that a healthier lifestyle and some natural remedies are all it takes to relieve you of your irritable bowel syndrome symptoms.
